So this is a story of other peoples misfortune, that I am somewhat finding amusement in right now. After the jump for fun...

Kinja'd!!!

So today one of the graphic designers I lean heavily on didn't come into work. I have been advising him on all the cars he wants but should not have as a junior graphic designer making no money. Like oh here is an 01 C43 AMG for $4500, is this a good car for me even though I know not how to change a headlight and have no money beyond the initial purchase price? Kid doesn't have a car, lives at home. I am trying to steer him into something durable and not labor intensive to keep right.

Kinja'd!!!

So he has been off to look at a bunch of cars on company time, which may have caused one of the owners to take a slight amount of pity on him and let the kid use the 04-ish Galant his son no longer needs. The only problem is it is under the owners insurance, which I am thinking was on liability only. This morning the designer did not show up because he totaled the Galant. I haven't talked to him yet to find out the damage, but god damn. What a way to start your career with a company. He has been here a month and a half.

Words to the wise - don't borrow the bosses car, and if you do, make sure you are extra careful with it and/or intend to own it.

Also helpful advice you should give him: Never, ever, ever choose a career as a graphic designer if you want such luxuries as a safe and running automobile.

I have put in my seat time both as a production graphic designer and as art and creative director. I prefer the latter much more :)

Aww, man. I'm not going to go the Schadenfreude route. This is just sad. However, "Never a borrower nor a lender be." At the very least, I hope it wasn't his fault. But it probably was.

Yup. I am looking forward to a more creative second career (right now I'm a software/mapping support guy for a group of geologists), but the only way I'll get back into design is if I don't have to make any compromises on the work I put out. Which means I pretty much have to work for myself. Which means I pretty much can count on not making that much money. Which means I need to sock away as much a possible in career #1...

I have known people who have struck out on their own and done well as a freelance. You just have to make sure your game is tight. I mean, $125/hr billable isnt too bad. If you have web skills (design, coding etc) you have an even better chance of success

Therein lies the rub. I'm best at, and prefer, identity design. I've done websites in the past, but there are so many variables to consider that there's very little joy in that kind of work for me.

Man this takes me back.

In 1999 I was the director of US e-commerce sales for a multinational software company. It was "boom time in the tech bubble," and we were hiring like crazy. On one particular day, myself and the regional VP of operations were interviewing candidates for mid-level sales positions in a conference room facing the parking lot. We had run through most of the morning interviews when we met a 30-ish guy with all the criteria we needed. In fact, before he had even gotten out of the first portion of the standard interview, we knew we wanted him on our sales team and made him a verbal offer on the spot, which he accepted. We told him the formal written offer and details would be forthcoming.

The meeting ended.

A few minutes later we went back into the conference room and saw the guy walking to his car, a late-90's white Volvo XC wagon if I remember right, get in it, and then proceed to back it straight into the rear bumper of the VP's brand new 2000 Porsche Cabrio at about 20mph...fast enough that it pushed the front end of Porsche up onto the the concrete parking block.

We watched this happen in real time.

The guy didn't even get out of his car to check the damages...he just drove off as the VP and I watched from the conference room....carrying the entire rear bumper of the Porsche locked onto on his Volvo on the way out of the parking lot.

The VP and I looked at each other in disbelief, and then it took about three seconds for us to check the resume' to get the guys name and notify the police of the hit and run we had just witnessed.

Within 15 minutes the police had arrested the guy, brought him back to the office for identification, and then transport him to jail for DUI and tampering with a alcohol interlock device.

Turns out, the guy not only lost out on a six-figure job, but, he also spent 17 months in jail since he was already on probation for charges as a habitual drunk driver.

To be fired, arrested, and jailed before you've even been hired is a real feat.

holy shit that is one hell of a story BZiel. Sadly hilarious. I am slightly in awe of this, and too bad it could have been a sweet boost for him to grab a good job, well for a little while at least till that bubble burst

That story is only the start. When I switched from traditonal e-com to porn sales, the stories got much better.

Cars run off of unfinished bridges, stolen Corvettes, police chases, shots fired...you name it...I saw it.

Best years of my life.

oh good lord I bet. My exs ex used to be in that biz and some of the stories were seriously entertaining. I need a job like that. I have all the prerequisites to do it effectively, but I dont think there is a ton of money in it anymore.

Holy crap. I bet the kid was driving like the valet in Ferris Bueller.

FTR, the last year for the C43 was 2000 as the 203 started in 01. The C43 is actually very reliable and easy to work on, parts are still extensive of course though.
